Spotify 2026: What’s *Really* Changing

▶ 2:23 Reading Time

You open Spotify, type “something melancholic for the train ride,” and get a playlist that sounds like it was hand-curated by your best friend. This isn’t science fiction – it’s Prompted Playlists, one of three major new features Spotify rolled out in early 2026.

DROP

  • Prompted Playlists: Describe a mood in words – Spotify builds you a playlist (available since January 2026)
  • About the Song: Swipeable story cards revealing the track’s backstory, lyrics’ meaning, and fun facts
  • Taste Profile (Beta): Spotify visualizes how it interprets your musical taste
  • Lossless Audio (FLAC, 24-bit) available to all Premium users since September 2025
  • Premium costs €12.99/month in Germany (price increased in August 2025)

Prompted Playlists: Your Vibe, Your Music

Since January 2026, you can tell Spotify in plain language what you want to hear – not genres or artists, but feelings. “Something to wind down after work,” “energizing for my morning run,” “’90s nostalgia – no cheesiness.” Spotify crafts a custom playlist on the spot.

This sounds familiar – like the AI DJ we’ve had for years. It is, only smarter. Prompted Playlists are savable, shareable, and editable. Refine them on the fly: “More bass,” “Less pop,” “Instrumentals only.” The AI learns not just from your listening history – but from your words.

About the Song: The Story Behind the Track

Since February 2026, Spotify displays swipeable story cards for select tracks – offering insights into how the song was made, the meaning behind its lyrics, and quirky trivia. Think Instagram Stories – but for music. Currently live in the US, UK, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, and Australia.

For music nerds, it’s gold. For casual listeners, it’s the difference between “a good song” and “I finally get why this is a good song.” Spotify is evolving beyond a player – it’s becoming a music magazine.

“Spotify isn’t just a player anymore. It’s a music magazine – one that explains why you feel what you feel.”

Taste Profile: Spotify Shows You Who You Are

Launched in beta in March 2026: Taste Profile. A visual, interactive map of your musical identity – not raw data, but a living profile. See which genres, moods, and eras define you. And take control: “Less mainstream,” “More underground.”

This is Spotify’s direct answer to long-standing criticism – that its algorithm traps you in an echo chamber. Now, you shape the bubble.

Lossless: Finally Here – But Can You Hear It?

Since September 2025, Spotify streams in FLAC quality (24-bit/44.1 kHz) for all Premium subscribers – no extra fee, no separate tier. Just there. Available in over 50 markets, including Germany.

The honest question: Can you hear the difference? With high-end in-ear monitors or a solid car audio system: yes – definitely. With AirPods on the subway? Probably not. Lossless is for people who don’t just hear music – they feel it.

Verdict
Spotify is worth it in 2026 if:
  • you love discovery and playlists
  • you want to experiment with AI-powered features
  • you need podcasts and music in one app
Consider alternatives if:
  • Dolby Atmos or Spatial Audio is your top priority (Apple Music)
  • you demand maximum audio fidelity (Tidal)
  • you refuse ads – even in the free tier

Q&A After the Show

Click any question to expand the answer.

Does Spotify cost more in 2026?
Yes. Premium costs €12.99 per month in Germany as of August 2025 (up from €11.99). Family plans cost €21.99, Duo €17.99, and Student €6.99.
Can you actually hear the difference with Lossless?
With high-quality headphones or a capable sound system: yes – especially with acoustic music and complex arrangements. With standard earbuds in noisy environments: likely not.
Is Spotify better than Apple Music?
Spotify still leads in music discovery, playlist curation, and social features. Apple Music offers Dolby Atmos and Spatial Audio. Audiophiles may prefer Apple Music or Tidal. If discovering new music is your priority – Spotify wins.
What exactly is Prompted Playlists?
You describe what you want to hear in natural language – e.g., “melancholic for the train ride” – and Spotify generates a custom playlist. Available since January 2026 in select markets.
