Same recording, two completely different masters. If you’re pressing a song to vinyl, you can’t just hand over the streaming file. The record demands decisions that nobody cares about in the digital world: how deep the bass can go, how bright the highs, how hot the signal. Once you understand these rules, you’ll also understand why a well-cut record often sounds warmer and more open than its digital twin. It’s not magic – it’s physics.

Why the Record Plays by Its Own Rules

In the digital world, sound is a string of numbers you can stack as high as you like. On vinyl, sound is a groove that a needle has to fit into, and that physical constraint changes everything. The lower the frequency, the wider the groove has to be cut. Feed the full, bass-heavy streaming mix straight into the cutting machine and the grooves grow so wide that only a few minutes will fit on a single side. An entire LP side becomes impossible.

That’s exactly what the RIAA curve was designed to solve – a standard that has been in force since the mid-1950s. During cutting, the bass is rolled off and the highs are boosted so the grooves stay narrow and controlled. Your turntable knows this curve and reverses it precisely on playback. Only then does the record sound balanced again. Without this trick, there simply would be no affordable vinyl record as we know it.

What Really Happens When the Lacquer Disc Is Cut

At the start of vinyl production, there is no piece of vinyl at all – only a lacquer disc. A cutting lathe, essentially a high-precision turntable running in reverse, uses a heated diamond stylus to carve the groove into this disc. The material the cutting engineer has in front of him at that moment determines the outcome. And this is where all the quirks that separate a vinyl master from a digital master converge.

Low frequencies are the first challenge. When the bass sits off-centre – spread differently across the left and right channels – it pulls the cutting head in two directions at once. In the best case the result sounds diffuse; in the worst, the needle skips out of the groove on playback. That’s why everything below roughly 300 Hz is summed to mono. Far from robbing the record of anything, this actually makes the bass tighter and more powerful.

The second challenge is the high end – sibilant S sounds in particular. Vinyl handles an excess of high-frequency energy poorly: it distorts both during cutting and on playback. Cutting studios therefore use dedicated de-essers to tame exactly these peaks. Deliver a mix that’s been compressed too aggressively and you make the cutting engineer’s job a nightmare, risking a record that hisses where it should shine.

The result is a happy one: a good vinyl master retains more dynamics, more space between quiet and loud.

That’s exactly what many people hear as warmth. It isn’t the vinyl itself that sounds warmer – it’s the fact that the master couldn’t be crushed into submission. The record demands a restraint that the digital version often lacks.
